Letter – 27 Ramadan 1352 (1934-01-14)
Letter from His Eminence Haj Sheikh Muhammad Hasan Bichareh Bidokhti Gonabadi, Saleh Ali Shah
to Hajji Ra’is al-Tujjar Salehi
It is expressed that in this world, hardship and suffering have always existed for everyone. For the righteous, because their inner reliance was on God through remembrance and heartfelt supplication, they endured with patience and perseverance, and thus attained relief—gaining both worldly and spiritual rewards. Others, in contrast, by losing patience and agitating themselves further, often failed to reach their goals.
In times of difficulty, one must be more mindful of their state and reflect on the causes of affliction. Make a personal vow and commitment to henceforth better adhere to the principles of faqr, which can be summarized in these three phrases: with God—obedience and worship; with all people—compassion; with one’s spiritual brethren—service. Obey both your spiritual and biological father, listen to the advice and instructions of friends, show concern for the weak, and in gratitude for comfort, forgive everyone—even those who have wronged you. Do not think that a friend is unaffected by the afflictions of another friend. Indeed, as the saying goes, “He who is in the midst of tribulation knows better than one outside of it.” True friendship demands earnestness and active engagement; one does not remain idle. Whatever the effort, the result lies with God.
At present, while you are unoccupied, recite اللهُ الصَّمَد ("Allah, the Eternal Refuge") a thousand times daily. And if you feel spiritually moved at times, recite: “O Lord, avert calamity, by the right of the King of the Valiant, by the right of the King of the Valiant, O Lord, avert calamity”. The friends send their regards and inquire about your well-being.
Peace be upon you. May God grant you success and set your affairs aright.
